I joined the event called ‘Steamroller Smackdown,’ which involves making letterpress posters in a competition with the top design teams in Seattle. We all created huge posters using a steamroller instead of a traditional printing press at the South Lake Union Block Party in 2015. I was a member of the Amazon team. The 2015 theme was ‘Man vs. Machine: Lo-Fi in a High-Tech City.’ My concept sketch was selected by our team members. My concept contrasted man-made donuts with machine-made with mechanical parts. It was both a fun and ironic image.
Our team decided to mix watercolors with black, gold and silver ink.
The day of the event was very hot and we were all excited to make huge posters together. We wore original t-shirts designed by Kevin Cox, which brought us a lot of a attention at the event. Our team won Honorable Mention for our poster. The judge was Leonard Garfield Executive Director of MOHAI. The grand champion was DEI Creative. Ten Gun Design and Tether also received Honorable Mentions.
Other 2015 competitors were Intentional Futures, Hornall Anderson, Turnstyle, Starbucks Creative Studio, Oracle, Fell Swoop, Evolution Press, Microsoft, Shapeshifter, PBJS, Paper Hammer, AIGA Seattle, Annie’s Art & Frame, and Astronauts & Poets.
